mixtape principles

what are the principles behind a good mixtape? i don't like the word rules (aesthetically speaking for some odd reason) and so i choose to think of this topic in different terms. plus, i don't know if there are set firm rules behind a great mixtape. i'm going to layout a few thoughts and hopefully articulate something of meaning and substance...

i think a preliminary consideration is what you plan to accomplish with your mixtape. u can go in many, many directions (e.g., the romantic mixtape to convey your love/feelings, the mixtape for just cruising in your ride and avoiding radio, the mixtape made for a specific party, the workout mixtape, the i got dumped and need some comforting music mixtape...the possibilities are truly endless). with your purpose in mind in many ways the rest will follow on its own...just think about what the music means to u, what u feel it says or conveys, and put it on there...use the music and creativity of others to express yourself.

some say a mixtape should start strong but not begin with it's best track...or else where do u go next? another rule is that after starting strong and then moving up you should ease off...so as not to front load the mix. Barney Stinson on the other hand would say not letting down...start strong, go stronger, and then even stronger.

personally, i don't adhere to any such rule, except maybe the first of not putting the best track at the start. beyond that, my focus is on creating a good flow and organization to the mixtape. it's all about figuring out which song leads to the next and to the next...i think ensuring the songs mesh with one another and create a coherent listening experience that conveys all u feel is the most important part of mixtaping.

at the end of the day, a good mixtape simply says what u think and feel. it fulfills its purpose and conveys what it should in an order that makes perfect sense. it goes from one track to the next and does not go awry...tho it can take u by surprise if that is right for the mix.

that's why there really can be no rules to the mixtape: a good mix tape depends on the mix and what u put on it and what u hope to convey. some mixes require some things while others require others. so mix on...i've got a couple mixes in mind right now, both themed for very specific things and i look forward to making them...hopefully they will be enjoyed.
