music and lyrics...

I find myself thoroughly enjoying the latest Usher singe, "Love In This Club" [feat. Young Jeezy]. By no means is this song a musical masterpiece. It's a pop song [pop music is a coming topic], a song made for mass appeal and exposure. Yet sometimes such songs are just great in their own right. Some songs, like some movies, are just plain, unadulterated fun. They may not be "classics," but they hold a special place in one's musical collection and faves. A movie in a similar vein is The Fast and the Furious. While not a great movie in terms of acting, storyline, etc. it is just a ton of fun and great in a different, entertaining way.

Yet, while in some ways "Love In This Club" falls into the line of songs that are just fun, it is at the same time [or at least in some way] different. "Love In This Club" is no lyrical masterpiece (the chorus repeats "I wanna make love in this club"). It lacks the depth and emotion of past Usher songs, like "Confessions" [Parts 1 & 2]. In a way it is really lacking lyrically and is unoriginal and just more "I want to take you from your man and make some hot lovin' with you." It's about the least romantic way to say "I want to bed you" ever: "I want to do you in the club, I don't care who sees, I'll even do you on the floor [the floor of a club???]." It's not the fun, thumping, danceable "Yeah!" [feat. Ludacris & Lil' Jon].

Yet there is something redeeming about the song: the production. The beat, the melody, the mixing of the vocals come together to provide a musicality that goes beyond the [silly] lyrics. Personally, another song of questionable lyrical taste that I love simply for the musicality is Rihanna's "Unfaithful." Weak on the lyrical front [referring to herself as a murderer for cheating on her man], I will still listen to the song over and over again...hearing the lyrics but mainly hearing the vocals as such...as opposed to spending much time on what is actually said.

Anyway, sometimes things just kinda don't make sense...but totally do. Especially when it comes to music.
